Can I take other medications with levothyroxine?

Imitrex is available as oral tablets, a nasal spray, and as an injection. Imitrex is a headache medicine that narrows blood vessels around the brain. Sumatriptan also reduces substances in the body that can trigger headache pain, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and other migraine symptoms. This is important as 32% of patients who think they are on SYNTHROID are actually not given this because substitutions are made at the pharmacy. 54% of prescriptions for SYNTHROID were not protected with a DAW or state-specific language in one study. The FDA has determined that drugs that are classified as therapeutically equivalent can be substituted with the full expectation that the substituted product will produce the same clinical effect and safety profile as the reference product.

What other drugs will affect Imitrex?

Absorption of orally administered T4 from the gastrointestinal tract ranges from 40% to 80%. The majority of the SYNTHROID dose is absorbed from the jejunum and upper ileum. The relative bioavailability of SYNTHROID tablets, compared to an equal nominal dose of oral levothyroxine sodium solution, is approximately 93%. T4 absorption is increased by fasting, and decreased in malabsorption syndromes and by certain foods such as soybeans.

Other drugs may interact with sumatriptan, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. HypothyroidismSYNTHROID® (levothyroxine sodium) tablets, for oral use is indicated as a replacement therapy in primary (thyroidal), secondary (pituitary), and tertiary (hypothalamic) congenital or acquired hypothyroidism. Once the patient and I have decided that thyroid hormone replacement is necessary, we go over the specific reasons for choosing and writing Synthroid as that replacement therapy. I review with the patients the important issues about how to take the medication, as consistency is really the key message. I talk about the fact that it’s important to take the medication in the same timing and pattern each day, take it on an empty stomach minutes before they eat.

  • Besides the pure calculator result – starting dose of levothyroxine – you will find useful notes on subclinical hypothyroidism on this page.
  • Some key points that I discuss with the patients during appointments are, one, is that this is an open conversation.
  • Using multivitamin with minerals together with levothyroxine may decrease the effects of levothyroxine.
  • You should avoid taking iron or calcium supplements within four hours of levothyroxine dose – they decrease hormone absorption.
  • If cardiac symptoms develop or worsen, reduce the SYNTHROID dose or withhold for one week and restart at a lower dose.
  • Hypothyroidism is a state when the thyroid gland – a small, two-lobed gland located at the front of our neck — cannot produce a sufficient amount of its hormones to meet the body’s metabolic demands.

DAW-1 indicates that substitution is not allowed, based on the prescriber’s preference, and ensures your patient will receive the treatment you prescribe. It also helps your patient pay the lowest possible price for the product you write if it is billed through insurance. There are certain foods that can interfere with the way SYNTHROID works, particularly we think about high-fiber foods that can interact with the absorption of thyroid medications. There are also certain vitamins and supplements that can interfere with the absorption of SYNTHROID. They can have changes in the female hormone status, either going on or off a birth control pill, going through menopause. Knowing that patient behaviors and consistency of treatment are key factors in treatment success, I educate patients on the process as they begin treatment.

How do I determine whether I have hypothyroidism?

  • I also review the safety and risks of taking thyroid medication.
  • Approximately 80% of the daily dose of T4 is deiodinated to yield equal amounts of T3 and reverse T3 (rT3).
  • They can have changes in the female hormone status, either going on or off a birth control pill, going through menopause.
  • TSH lower limit of quantification was 0.2 mIU/L and upper limit of normal was 5.6 mIU/L, as indicated by the shaded area.

It’s important to always take your medication exactly as your doctor prescribed. Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Do not use Imitrex if you synthroid oxycodone have used an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days. MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine, and others. DAW codes are codes a pharmacy uses when filling your patient’s prescription.

For drug interactions that result in binding of the levothyroxine and therefore decreased absorption of the drug from the intestine, it is very important to avoid taking the interacting medicine at the same time as levothyroxine. In fact, it is recommended to separate the administration of these medicines from levothyroxine by 4 hours. Toxic effects may include increased risk of cardiac arrhythmias and central nervous system stimulation. Administration of sertraline in patients stabilized on SYNTHROID may result in increased SYNTHROID requirements. Over-treatment with levothyroxine may cause an increase in heart rate, cardiac wall thickness, and cardiac contractility and may precipitate angina or arrhythmias, particularly in patients with cardiovascular disease and in elderly patients. Initiate SYNTHROID therapy in this population at lower doses than those recommended in younger individuals or in patients without cardiac disease see Dosage and Administration (2.3) and Use in Specific Populations (8.5).

The pituitary gland is controlled by the hypothalamus, which produces TRH — thyrotropin-releasing hormone to stimulate the pituitary gland. Hypothyroidism is a state when the thyroid gland – a small, two-lobed gland located at the front of our neck — cannot produce a sufficient amount of its hormones to meet the body’s metabolic demands. Do not use Imitrex within 24 hours before or after using any other migraine headache medicine.

Check Interactions

Therefore, a decrease in the dose of anticoagulant may be warranted with correction of the hypothyroid state or when the SYNTHROID dose is increased. Closely monitor coagulation tests to permit appropriate and timely dosage adjustments. Pseudotumor cerebri and slipped capital femoral epiphysis have been reported in pediatric patients receiving levothyroxine therapy. SYNTHROID is indicated in adult and pediatric patients, including neonates, as an adjunct to surgery and radioiodine therapy in the management of thyrotropin-dependent well-differentiated thyroid cancer. It is crucial to treat hypothyroidism and take the right levothyroxine dosage. Untreated thyroid gland failure can lead to infertility, neuromuscular dysfunctions, cognitive impairment, pericardial or pleural effusion, or even coma.

Thyroid hormones are also metabolized via conjugation with glucuronides and sulfates and excreted directly into the bile and gut where they undergo enterohepatic recirculation. Reduce the SYNTHROID dosage or discontinue temporarily if signs or symptoms of overdosage occur. Initiate appropriate supportive treatment as dictated by the patient’s medical status.

Do not take more than 200 milligrams of oral Imitrex within 24 hours. If you use a breast pump during this time, throw out any milk you collect. It is not known whether this medicine will harm an unborn baby.
